In Honor of Ed Rutkowski

Hello PPPCS Families and Friends,

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I write to inform you that Ed Rutkowski, a Founder and the former Executive Director of Patterson Park Public Charter School, passed away on Thursday night.

There will be calling hours on Monday, July 22nd from 3-8 pm at Lilly & Zeiller funeral home and visitation on Tuesday, July 23rd starting at 10 am followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.  Additional details can be found in his obituary here.

Ed played a special role in so many people’s lives at PPPCS and throughout Baltimore.  He rebuilt and financed the homes our families and neighbors live in, he coached kids to be critical thinkers through chess, and he fought so hard for his community, for our community.  For those of you who didn’t know Ed, here is an “Abell Salutes” piece and a Baltimore Sun  article that tell his story.

Personally, Ed was a coach and a mentor.  He asked tough questions and was always up for a “What Would Ed Do?” phone call or lunch at Matthew’s Pizza.  His rationale for almost every piece of advice was, “because it’s the right thing to do,” and his guidance helped our PPPCS team fill the big shoes he left behind.

We are really going to miss him, and we hope you can join with the PPPCS community on Tuesday to celebrate Ed’s legacy.

As per Ed's beloved wife, Kay Rutkowski's request, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Patterson Park Public Charter School here.

With sadness...

Jane Lindenfelser, Executive Director
