Frequently asked questions

1. What is a “charter school” ? A charter school is a public school of choice that is organized by a group of parents, community members, teachers, or others and sponsored by an existing public school board—in our case Baltimore City Public School System. Charter schools are open to all students and they do not charge tuition. Funding is provided through state, local and federal revenues. They operate more independently than traditional public schools do, and are held accountable for both their student academic performance and fiscal practice. The specific goals and operating procedures for Patterson Park Public Charter School are spelled out in the charter document—the legal agreement between the charter granting board and the organizers.

2. What is the focus of the school? In addition to a strong academic program, Patterson Park Public Charter School's vision emphasizes three critical components: strong family involvement, community interaction and diversity.

3. Who are the students? The students at Patterson Park Public Charter School reflect the socioeconomic, racial and ethnic diversity of our neighborhoods, including high and low performing students, English language learners and special education students. There is no formal admissions requirements, but it is expected that enrolling families be familiar with and support the mission and vision of the school. If the number of applicants exceed the capacity of the school, enrollment will be determined by a public random lottery.

5. Is there an Enrollment Zone? No. Charter schools, by law, have to be open to all students in the city. If there are more applicants during the annual open enrollment period enrollment will be decided by a lottery.

6. Are teachers credentialed? Core subject teachers are required to hold the Maryland State Certification.

7. What type of enrichment activities are offered? The core curriculum is supplemented by instructional activities in art, music, physical education, Spanish language (starting in Kindergarten), and community service. The school has developed partnerships with local organizations such as Audubon Maryland-DC, the Creative Alliance, and Living Classrooms Foundation to provide hands-on learning opportunities for science in the park and art programs.

8. How much input do parents have regarding curriculum and activities? As a family participation school, parents will have many opportunities for input and suggestions. Ultimate decisions regarding curriculum will be made by the school staff/administration and Board, who have a commitment to the school's education plan based on the school's mission and vision statements outlined in the charter document.

9. How does family participation work? Each family is expected to give 30 hours (couples) and 15 hours (single parents) per year toward the school. The fulfillment of parent and guardian volunteer hours will be flexible so that families can participate in a variety of ways.

10. Are students required to wear school uniforms? Yes, there is a mandatory school uniform policy.
