Enrollment 2009-2010
Important Dates and
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to enroll at Patterson Park Public
Charter School?
The only requirements are that the family must be a
resident of Baltimore
City and the child must
meet the school system’s age requirements.
Except for founder and sibling preferences described below, all students
meeting residence and age requirements have an equal chance of being accepted.
What grades is PPPCS accepting
applications for?
We are accepting applications for all grades,
K-8. However, there are a limited number
of openings for all but kindergarten. We
expect to have about 80 openings for kindergarten, 5-10 for first grade, and a
small number for other grade levels.
How does enrollment work?
As in the past, we expect to have more applications
than openings for all grades. In those
cases, according to state law, all applicants received by February 25 are
placed in a random lottery. Applications
for the lottery must be received by February 25 and the lottery will be
conducted on February 27.
Families
whose children are accepted will be notified by March 6. All other students will be placed on a
waiting list in the same order that they were drawn. Those families will be notified that they are
on the waiting list.
Families on the waiting list are notified of
acceptance as openings occur, in the order in which they were drawn in the
lottery. Applications received after
February 25 are added to the end of the waiting list in the order received.
Families who are accepted at the time of the lottery
have until April 3 to enroll their child by completing the enrollment packet.
Enrollments not received by that date will forfeit their acceptance into the
school. When we accept students after
the lottery, we will notify families of the deadline for enrollment.
Can you explain founder and sibling
preferences?
There are 60 official “founders” of the Patterson Park Public
Charter School,
some of whom have already entered the school or will be entering the school
over the next few years. Because of
their effort in founding the school, their children are automatically accepted
into kindergarten and first grade regardless of the number of openings. After first grade, founders’ children go to
the front of the waiting list.
The sibling of any current PPPCS student is placed at
the top of the waiting list for their grade, behind any applicants with founder
preferences. Applicants with founder or
sibling preferences will be accepted before any applicants from the lottery.
When will you know how many openings
you have?
We will know the precise number of kindergarten
openings by March 6 and will estimate the number of openings for other grades
at that time. However, the number of
openings in other grades will depend on expected, and then actual
attrition. As openings occur, we will
notify families of acceptance according to their position on the waiting list. At this time, very few students have left PPPCS this
school year. Based on the configuration
of our school, the number of classes per grade decreases in the upper grades.
What is
“Fun in the Sun?”
PPPCS hosts
a picnic celebration for all PPPCS families in Patterson Park. It is an opportunity to meet teachers, other
parents, and members of the PPPCS community.
Families
will also have an opportunity to order uniforms for their children. PPPCS is a mandatory uniform school that uses
Flynn O’Hara as their vendor to provide school uniforms. Flynn O’Hara comes to
the school for onsite uniform fittings and ordering twice a year, in Spring and
Summer. They also have a retail store in Towson
and a website. “Fun in the Sun” provides an opportunity for families to try on
and order uniforms that are guaranteed to arrive prior to the beginning of
school.
