Now Hiring: Executive Director - Patterson Park Public Charter School

Baltimore’s Patterson Park Public Charter School (PPPCS) seeks an innovative, dynamic, community-minded Executive Director. PPPCS is a public charter school in the Baltimore City Public School System that is completing its third year of operation. PPPCS will offer Kindergarten through 7th grade classes next year and will add 8th grade the following year.  The total school enrollment when K-8 will be 550 students.  This position will offer the right administrator a unique opportunity to continue the growth and evolution of an excellent school with strong community support.

Patterson Park Public Charter School is a tuition-free public school which aims to offer students high-quality, community-based education and to provide administrators and teachers the freedom to put their creativity and knowledge to work in an environment committed to collaboration and teacher initiative. Interactive, hands-on project-based curriculum and the involvement of and with the community are key pieces of the school’s approach.

PPPCS is operated by Patterson Park Public Charter School, Inc. a Maryland not for profit corporation that is managed by a community-based Board of Directors. The Executive Director reports to the board and shares leadership with the principal who also reports to the board. The principal is responsible for the academic program and the Executive Director is responsible for the operation of the not for profit entity and provides all the services to support the school program.

The school is housed in two buildings across from a large urban park, is minutes from downtown Baltimore and blocks from the harbor in historic Fells Point. One of the buildings was renovated before the school opened.  The second building renovation will be completed before school opens in August of 2008 and there are plans for a third building that is to be completed before the fall of 2009.

The school is open to all students in the city but primarily draws from the six neighborhoods that border the park, the student base for the school is diverse socio-economically, culturally, and racially.

Applicants for the position of Executive Director must have the desire to work collaboratively with the school’s principal, teachers, parents, students, board, and community partners, and the energy and enthusiasm to take on a project of this scope. Applicants should be strong leaders with experience in not for profit management. Public school management experience and fluency in Spanish are also desirable.

The Executive Director will have direct responsibility for doing or managing the following:
  • Working with the board on policy development for the school and the general management of the not for profit entity.
  • Budget preparation, financial accounting, financial reporting to the board, supervision of the annual audit, payroll and benefits management for non BCPSS employees, and cash flow management.
  • Oversee the management of all non-academic programs including the Community Schools initiatives, any before school or after school care, community education efforts including GED prep, parenting education, etc.
  • Organization image management and marketing including maintenance of the website, marketing for enrollment, promotion of school events, and relationships with community organizations, political leaders, funders and community partners.
  • Fund Raising including work with the board leadership and parent organization on identification of fund raising activities, coordination of events, promotion/advertising, logistics, and financial management. This will also include developing relationships with major funders and procurement of grant funding for programs and operations.
  • Advocacy, including maintaining a working relationship with the Baltimore City School System. The Executive Director serves as the “operator’s representative” in dealing with BCPSS and is primarily responsible for compliance with the charter issued to the school by BCPSS. This will also include participation in the Baltimore Coalition for Public Charter Schools and the Maryland Charter School Network. The Executive Director will be the lead person to mobilize school community members when a presence is needed before a political body (school board, city council, state legislature, etc.)
  • Facility management including security, custodial services, preventive maintenance, access and use, and general repair. The board has retained a project manager to manage the renovation and construction projects so the Executive Director will not have to manage those activities but will assume responsibility for the entire facility upon completion of the construction.
  • Support staff supervision. All certificated personnel are employees of BCPSS and as such are supervised by and evaluated by the principal who is also a BCPSS employee. All non-certificated personnel are employees of the not for profit entity or contractors and are supervised by the Executive Director.

We are accepting applications now and plan to fill the position by July or earlier, depending on the selected candidate’s availability. Salary is negotiable based on experience from a base of $80,000.
